# matrix at salix.host

salix@host:~/matrix

A public, privacy-friendly Matrix homeserver: federated chat without an email address, phone number, or advertising profile.

whoami # @you:salix.host

## why salix.host?

e2ee private by default

End-to-end encryption via Matrix. Your conversations belong to you, not to an ad network.

fed decentralized

Matrix federation means you can talk to anyone on any server. No lock-in, ever. Take your identity with you.

anon minimal footprint

Sign up with just a username. No email, no phone number, no identity checks, no data harvesting.

foss open source

Matrix is an open protocol with open clients. Audit the code, pick any app, or build your own.

## how it works

Different servers, one conversation: rooms are shared across homeservers.
  1. 01 one network, many homes

Matrix works a little like email: your address can be @you:salix.host, someone else might be @friend:matrix.org, and you can still message each other and join the same rooms. No single company owns the network, and you can use whichever compatible app you prefer.
  2. 02 open registration, without identity checks

Registration is token-gated to keep spam out, but you need only a username and password. No email address or phone number. The short anti-spam check runs in your browser without a third-party captcha or tracking cookies.
  3. 03 boring infrastructure, on purpose

The server runs Synapse, the established Matrix homeserver implementation, on a server I manage in Germany. For a service other people depend on, reliable beats experimental.
  4. 04 run by a person

I administer salix.host personally. There is no advertising company or data broker in the loop, but there is also no corporate support desk or SLA. If something breaks, message @salix:salix.host or visit the community room.
