# element web
Element Web is the web client I host for this server, running at chat.salix.host. It’s the flagship Matrix client: full-featured, works in any modern browser, and it’s where the sign-up flow on the Matrix page takes you.
If you’re new to Matrix, start here. It handles everything: encrypted chats, voice and video calls, spaces, room moderation, the works. It will also walk you through the important stuff, like setting up your recovery key. Do that one, seriously. With end-to-end encryption there is no “forgot password” button that gets your history back, the recovery key is what saves you when you log in on a new device.
Once you’re comfortable you can switch to any other Matrix client (Element X on mobile is great) and your account just follows, that’s the nice thing about an open protocol. You can even stay logged in on several clients at once, they all see the same conversations.
One practical tip: because it’s a web app, your session lives in the browser. Clearing your browser data logs you out, so make sure you have that recovery key stored somewhere safe before you do a big cleanup.
I host the client, but it’s built by Element upstream. I just keep it updated and pointed at this server, so the version you get here follows their releases pretty closely.
